What You Need To Know As An Indie Artist About Making It Big
By Henry Vargas

A quick question. What do Colbe Caillet, Kinna Grannis and many other new artist have in common. ..? Go ahead, take a guess. Give up? They were discovered on the internet! I will be sharing with you what the big deal about that is later in this article, for now just now that that’s a big factor.

So a couple of the things you may have noticed over the past few years in the music industry is a shift. Not only a shift in the buyers of CDs, but also in the artist who make CDs. If youve watched the news or followed the industry, you’d know that according to their resources, less and less people are buying CDs, which is crippling The Big Three. The Big Three are the three major labels that make up what’s known as the industry. There are a couple reasons for this, as I will share with you now.

First, unlikely your first guess, is because people are tired of buying CDs with one or two good songs on them and a bunch of $15 garbage! That’s right, I said it! Most of the CDs released today are simply made up of one or two good to great songs, and all the rest are just filler to fill a CD. Now, this is not necessarily true of all genres, but it is for the most part.

Remember several years ago a company named Napster started a new way of sharing music? Did you know that at Napster’s height, CD sales were at increased by 5%, which is alot considering that could mean millions of dollars. Did you know however that the major players were so scared about letting people sample their music by letting them download it for free that they actually pursued Napster with legal action and got it shut down? But here’s the clencher, after they successfully shut down Napster, CD sales Dropped 4%. That’s a 9 % swing representing millions if not billions of dollars.

So here is the first secret I’ll reveal to you…ready…..here goes…..Give people the chance to sample your music by giving them at least 1 Free download of one of your songs. There you go, the first secret.

Now, another thing the Big 3 will get made at me for sharing with you is the fact you no longer need their permission to create, market and become the star you want to be (if that’s what you want of course). Remember I mentioned earlier Colbe Caillet and Kinna Grannis, well the reason I point them out is because before they were approached by a major record label they already had a fan base, and in the music world the fan base list is gold. They very well could have made a wonderful fortune without the major record deal, (and they would still be able to go to the grocery store without getting mobbed by papparatzie).

A third thing I will share with you is the fact that it is possible to make over $100,000 a year with your music without a major record deal. That’s one of the main reasons why the major record labels may get mad at me but to bad. I believe that as indie artist and musicians, you guys (and girls) should keep most of the money you work so hard (or play so hard) to make. That’s one of my goals is to assist as many of you as possible to achieve success with you music.

So, I will come back and write some more useful stuff for you all, until then.
