‘Viva La Vida’ Simultaneously Tops the Album Charts in Canada, US and UK
Album Sets Worldwide Record On The iTunes Store
Coldplay ’s latest album, Viva La Vida , debuts today at No. 1 on both the Soundscan Album Chart in Canada and the Billboard 200 in the U.S. Viva La Vida has topped the UK album chart for the second week in a row, while No. 1 rankings continue to come in from around the globe including Japan, Australia, France and Germany. This is the best sales week for a release in Canada since October 2006.
This is Coldplay ’s third straight studio album to debut at No. 1 in Canada. The band’s three previous studio albums also shot up to the top three spots - A Rush Of Blood To The Head (No. 1), Parachutes (No. 2) and X&Y (No. 3) - on the Soundscan Catalogue Chart for Canada this week.
Already the biggest album pre-order in iTunes history, Viva La Vida also set the record for highest first-week album sales ever on the iTunes® Store worldwide. Coldplay has the best ever sales week for a Digital Album in Canada since Soundscan started tabulating digital sales in February 2005.
Coldplay will perform on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” tonight and on the “TODAY” show on NBC this Friday, June 27. The band will also appear on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on July 17. Lead singer Chris Martin is featured on the cover of the current Rolling Stone and Coldplay is on the covers of the current UR Magazine and Spin Magazine.
The band celebrated the release of Viva La Vida with a free concert at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Monday night and will launch its North American tour with two sold out dates at The Forum in Los Angeles on July 14th and 15th. Details on the tour are available at: http://www.coldplay.com or http://www.livenation.com .
Produced by Brian Eno and Markus Dravs, Viva La Vida is the follow-up to 2005’s X&Y , which also debuted at No. 1 in 32 countries including Canada, going on to sell 10 million copies worldwide to date.
