HiSTORY:

Beginning in 1992, Caustic Truths has evolved into a very diverse magazine, covering all spectrums

of heavy music, whether it be traditional punk music, classic hardcore or the many diverse styles

of metal. Various music labels covering different spectrums of music have also at one point or

another become a part of Caustic Truth’s evolution. However, the magazine doesn’t cater exclusively

to the world of music. The realms of video games, the fashion world and the movie industry have also

been covered, bringing an even more open-minded demographic. Artists as diverse as Johnny Rotten (of

the Sex Pistols), Ministry, Paul D’ianno (of Iron Maiden), and Zakk Wylde (of the Black Label

Society, and Ozzy Osborne) have been featured as the cover personalities. As well, other

personalities such as Jello Biafra, Amy Lee (of Evanescence), Lamb of God, Fat Mike (of NOFX), Sonic

Youth, Sum 41, The White Stripes, and The Hives have been given the opportunity to express their

opinions through in-depth interviews. Due to a stellar response in the underground and word of mouth,

Caustic Truths has progressed from its early days as a black and white fanzine to a national magazine

with full glossy colour covers carried by big distribution chains.

SNAGGLETOOTH MAGAZINE

Caustic Truth’s Sister publication, SnaggleTooth Magazine (named after a Motörhead song) reared its

ugly head some time in 2004, not as an alter-ego of Caustic Truths but more of a continuation of

established principles. Focusing slightly more on the pure Metal world, the publication was received

well, and such personalities as Dave Mustaine of MEGADETH, SLIPKNOT, ROB ZOMBIE, LACUNA COIL and

BLACK SABBATH made appearance in the magazine. The publication ran for 9 straight issues and it is on

hiatus at the moment.

WRITER GUIDELINES
Hello,

These are the new writing guidelines for Caustic Truths! Some of these suggestions seem obvious, but it is very hard to notice mistakes in your own writing, which is why we have guidelines… and a copy editor. For whatever reason, if you are curious, confused or filled with rage due to any changes I have made to your piece, please feel free to email me: clareb@caustictruths.com

Cheers!

TITLES:

–When writing an article, make sure that the headline follows these stipulations:
Band name in capitals; subheading with capitalized first words only (including ‘small words’, i.e. ‘to,’ ‘and,’ ‘or,’ ‘the,’ etc); author’s name.

Example:

STRATOVARIUS ← Band name in CAPS
The Masters Aren’t Dead Yet ← Sub-headline
Clare B. ← Author’s name

–Sub-headlines must have some sort of creative name—even if your piece is an interview. The days of “An interview with so-and-so” are gone.

–If you fail to submit your story with a subheading/title (for whatever reason), it will be chosen for you; keep in mind, however, that a title we select for you may not be as appropriate if I am unfamiliar with your subject, so it’s best if you choose it! If you’re stuck for a title, here are a few suggestions:

- Some short phrase summarizing of the article’s focus, current band status, style, etc (Like the example given above).

- A play on band / subject-related words, using an album / song title / band slogan as a base (In which case, the above sub-headline suggestion could have been: ‘Where Have All The Years Gone?’ That is one of the band’s lyrics, in addition to which makes some sort of relevant point).

Album Titles:

– Do not use italicized or bolded fonts, quotation marks or any other text alteration to distinguish album titles. Album titles within your article must be written with ALL first letters in capitals, even those ‘small words.’ Before I get a million e-mails telling me that you aren’t supposed to capitalize ‘small words’ in titles—yes, I am aware of this; although it may seem like an arbitrary rule, we are just trying to make things a little more consistent, plus Caustic Truths does not make distinctions for titles (i.e. quotation marks, italicized / bolded text, etc).
Example:

The band’s third album, I Like To Eat Poo, was a tremendous success.
NOT
The band’s third album, I like to Eat Poo, was…

Song titles:
–Song titles within your article or review must be presented in double quotation marks. As with album titles, capitalize the ‘small words.’
Example:

John says that the album’s single, “I Am A Huge Octopus,” was part of the reason for the band’s unpopularity.

REVIEWS

–All information preceding your review is in CAPITALS and follows this order: band name, album title, record label and rating. A review in Caustic Truths typically ranges from 50 – 70 words.

–The rating system in CT is out of 5 points. Instead of writing ‘4/5’ for instance, use exclamation marks (see below). You can apply decimals, by the way, which advance in intervals of 5.

Here is an example of the format to follow when submitting reviews:

SUFFOCATION
SOULS TO DENY
RELAPSE RECORDS
!!!!.5

This is where the review will go. Remember to use capitalized first letters when writing the album title, like this: Souls To Deny and song titles within quotation marks, like this; “Abomination Reborn.” Also, be concise since there are word limitations for reviews—remember, try limiting your review to 50-70 words.

— Author’s Name

Based on your rating and the importance of the album in question, your review may be selected as the ‘lead review.’ In this case, upon notification you will extend your review to about 100 words, on top of which you will need to come up with some kind of subheading for your reivew (like you do with articles).

FORMATTING

& vs And:

– Do NOT use an ampersand (&) in your writing. Not only does it look unprofessional, but it fucks with the program Richard uses to lay out the magazine. Just use ‘and.’
This rule is extended to instances where an ampersand is actually part of the name of something (i.e. a band title, production company, etc). Ideally we’d like to be able to keep titles as accurate as possible, but it does evil things to the layout, apparently. So ALWAYS use ‘and.’

Italics:

– Similarly, I’ve been told that italicizing fonts creates issues in the layout process. If you have any queries about this, please contact Richard as I do not perform the layouts. Anyway, do not use italics in your articles. We’ll keep you posted on this.

Paragraphs:

– When beginning a new paragraph, do not indent anything. Double space your next paragraph. I realize some word processing programs may automatically create indents. Although it’s evidently easy for me to fix the indenting problem, at least keep an eye on making some sort of distinction; any piece that is submitted simply in one big lump, with no evident paragraphs indicated, will be sent back to the writer. If you are inserting a quote from an interviewee, again, make sure it’s clear whether or not the quote appears at the start of a new paragraph.

Quotes and Quotation Marks:

– When quoting an interviewee, make sure their quotes are in double (“) quotation marks.
Example:

Bill explains, “When we were kids, we knew we’d be rock stars.”

– Anytime there is a quote within a quote, use single (‘) quotation marks.
Example:

Bill explains, “When we were kids, we knew we’d be rock stars. John said to me one day, ‘Bill, I know we’re going to be rich and famous.’ And here we are.”

– If you are writing a word which needs to be set aside for some reason—a nonquoted word—use single quotation marks.
Example:

Many people find power metal to be ‘cheesy.’

– If you use a nonquoted word in double quotation marks, it reads as a quote from your interviewee, and in that sense, you could be seen as putting words in his or her mouth. Please make sure that if you are quoting a single word from an interviewee, that you use double quotation marks (I know it’s nit-picky, but nonetheless is something to keep in mind).
Example:

The band started out in the 80s, and though the early days were “rough,” it quickly became one of the top acts of the decade.

– If an interviewee’s quote is longer than one paragraph, do not employ quotation marks at the end of the first one. Open the quotation marks in the second one. Whenever the quote ends, close the quotation marks.
Example:

Bill explains, “When we were kids, we knew we’d be rock stars. John said to me one day, ‘Bill, I know we’re going to be rich and famous.’ And here we are.

“The other thing was that we got more and more determined as the years went on. Although we couldn’t actually play instruments, we knew we were attractive enough to succeed as superstars.”

– If you are adding something into the interviewee’s quote, whether it’s to correct their English, important information for readers, indicate laughter or whatever else, put your words between SQUARE brackets: [these things].
Example:

Bill explains, “When we were kids, we knew we’d be rock stars. John [Smith, guitar] said to me one day, ‘Bill, I know we’re going to be rich and famous.’ [Laughs] And here we are.”

– Finally, punctuation goes INSIDE the quotation marks (see above examples).

Caustic Truths!
–When writing ‘Caustic Truths’ within your article, include an exclamation mark; it is actually part of the title.
Example:

Thank you for doing this interview with Caustic Truths! today.

Numbers:
–When writing numbers, Richard suggests we all write numbers numerically.
Example:

The band has been making music for 20 years.

–When writing something like ‘third,’ keep it ‘third.’ Don’t write it as ‘3rd.’ I know, again, it seems arbitrary; if there are inconsistencies in the article, don’t worry about it. They will be made fixed in the editing process.

Do we take CD/DVD reviews?

We kind of take press requests and cd stuff at Sonic Bids Click for more details.

Other editiorial related questions?

We only accept stuff at:
Caustic Truths, PO Box 1190, Stn A, Toronto, Ont., M5W 1G6
A lot of unsolicited stuff sent in does get recycled so please do consider this to save yourself some $.

As Caustic Truths has a select few set of writers for CD reviews, we are now taking submissions for stories ideas including articles on current band releases, lifestyle (i.e. movie,) and any such stories/articles that are worthy for our readership and audience. We like unique stuff in which you will not find in other publications. Remember that our genre of coverage lies between music (metal, punk, hardcore and anything between), music gear, movies (esp. horror or music related), video games, fashion, technology, and even other items interesting to modern day metal heads. Let us know via a ‘pitch’ to the editor. If interested, they will back to you on if what you present is interesting. Make it detailed as possible to entice us. All ‘pitches’ can be made by Contacting Us at our feedback form.

1. Please capitalize ALL your headline and just use the band’s name. i.e. MOTORHEAD.
2. For the sub headline, just capitalize but not all. i.e. Lemmy Rules My Life
3. In all stories, please put in order THE HEADLINE (Band interv0ew), followed by your Sub Headline, and your name (byline). SO again, make the first three lines look like:
MOTORHEAD
They Rock My World
Joe Blow the Author
4. Make all documents compatible with Word 2004 for Mac OS/X. Office 2003 Word or earlier for Windows should be fine.
5. At all costs, please avoid using the symbol & in your editorial for both stories and reviews. The layout system do not like them so use the word ‘and’ instead!!
6. For reviews:
A, Capitlize Band, Album, and Label i.e.
MOTORHEAD
ACE OF SPADES
SANCTUARY
B, follow that by the rating like !!! out of 5. Instead of using the number, please exclamation marks like !. i.e.
!!!!!
C. Put your name with mixed and capital and lower like:
Joe Bloe
C. The review should be 50 to 70 words in length. I usually keep print reviews to 30 in the print edition to give ‘exclusitivity’ and pick reviews based on a number of factors.
So in a nutshell, the entire review should look like:

TORTURE KILLER
SWARM
METAL BLADE RECORDS
4.0
Chris Barnes is quickly becoming the poster boy for death metal. Yeah, he’s an ugly sonofabitch, but so is this music. Torture Killer is another project Mr. Barnes has his THC-stained fingers on and it sees him slowing things down to a mid-paced thrash crawl with Torture Killer. If you are looking for ultra technical, over the top death metal that is laced with finger bending guitar solos, Swarm ain’t it. You’d be hard pressed to find even one solo on the ten tracks on this CD. However, Swarm is crammed full of crunchy, head bangingly delicious riffs and pit busting metallic hooks. Think Obituary meets Six Feet Under, which is pretty much how Torture Killer started out. This is thicker than your mother-in-law’s arse!
Brad Mitchell

Due to the lack of seriousness on the publcity front, I am now leaving the onus on writers to submit stories and pitches to me. I am getting tired of the “less serious’ publicists who do not have the courtesy to let me know what is going on with stories I assign people. I am completely burnt out from hand holding both writers and publicists to ensure stuff gets done. Personally, this should not be my job and I do not have the energy and resources to do this. It is now up to you submit stories/ideas that is worthy doing on a monthly basis. You will need to reserve slots and features no if ends or buts. I will only be focusing on top selling bands/product info from here on and out. This will be taking effect immediately which will mean the Sept 06 issue will be some big changes. I will send out the odd the item on a commissioning basis to the worthy writers.

If you are publicist, you will need to reach out to my writers to let them know what is going on. As for CD reviews,

our current policy still stands.

Big thanks and good luck.

Due to the large volume of CDs we get each week, we want to keep our review sections small. We work a very select group of labels which we feel is more than adequate for our readership and site visitors.
