Pere Ubu - Modern Drummer music instrument blog
Pere Ubu¹s Steve Mehlman
2008-03-17
Hi. Steve Mehlman reporting from Cleveland. I¹ve been playing drums forŠa
long time. I¹ve played a million shows with a ton of different bands, like
Pere Ubu, Rocket From the Tombs, and yes, even some cover bands‹they pay.
I¹m on a bunch of releases‹most recently the Pere Ubu album Why I Hate Women
and the last Rocket From The Tombs album, Rocket Redux (both out on
smogveil.com) ‹plus a slew of albums that you couldn¹t find if you wanted to.
I¹m not what you¹d call a real technical drummer. I took lessons for a
couple years way back in the day, and what I took from that was mostly how
to read drum music for school‹orchestra, wind ensemble, marching band, and
all that.
I¹m told that I¹m a basherŠ andŠwell, I do prefer to beat the f*** out of my
drums. Most of my swings start behind my head, and I aim for the floor,
shaft on the edge of cymbals that are mounted too tight so that they don¹t
flop around too much when I¹m playing fast. I bend way the hell over and
lean into every hit (well, depending on which band we¹re talking about), and
I sometimes refer to myself as a Cro-Magnon drummer. You¹ve seen the
evolutionary-chain picture where it goes from monkey to man in like six easy
steps? I figure I¹m somewhere around the third or fourth step. You know, a
little primal. BUT, I can mix it up.
I don¹t really like to talk shop (really kinda can¹t stand it), but I know
what I like‹my gear and nothing else will quite do. But whatever, I get
stuck with a lot of rental gear. I never spent a lot of time practicing
(which is why there are twelve-year-olds who just crush me). Rudiments?
Blech. Hate it. Wish I liked doing it, but no.
Tuning? That¹s for drum techsŠGod, I wish I had a drum tech. So, yeah, learn
to tune your drums, so you can get a job as a drum tech.
And I can¹t even guess how many times my eighteen-year-old kit has been
toppled‹singer over the top, kicked thru plexi-glass shields, dropped down
stairs, rained on, fell out of the truck, slammed to the ground in fits of
rage, etc.‹but it¹d be easy to tell you how many times I¹ve cleaned them:
I¹m pretty sure there¹s some eighteen-year-old spit, sweat, and beer on
there. Ugh. I think I might go clean my drums.
I ain¹t one of those guys who can talk endlessly about all the greats of
drumming and their attributes, and who¹s better than who, and why, and
blah-f***ing-blah. I¹m not what you¹d call a history buff. I don¹t think
John Bonham was the best drummer in the world; that¹s Stewart Copeland.
Well, sure, I suppose there are better guys, but I loves me some Stewart
Copeland. There¹s a huge list of people who make Neil Peart and Keith Moon
look like chumps‹I ain¹t sayin¹ I¹m one of ¹em, I¹m just sayin¹. But so
what? Most famous drummer in the world? Nowadays, that¹s probably the lovely
Meg White. So, like whomever you want, but there¹s always some little kid
who¹s better than your heroes.
Anyway, all my opinions aside‹time to pimp my wares. I have a Yamaha Rock
Tour Custom four-piece kit‹22" kick, 6×14 (or 61/2" or 51/2"), 12" rack
(sometimes 13" instead), and 16" floor (sometimes my 18" CB700 instead). I
generally only play Zildjian cymbals, but I¹ll use anything I find that¹s
heavy and sounds good. I use a 14" Quick Beat bottom with a bottom New Beat
on top for my hats, a 20" A Custom medium ride (sometimes as the crash,
though they all get crashed), and a 20" K Custom Hybrid ride. (Love the
sound, but it¹s not that heavy.) Black leather Pork Pie throne‹love it.
Finally got some DW5000 pedals. Mostly Tama hardware. LOW Ludwig snare
stand. Pro-Mark 808 sticks. Heads are generally Remo Pinstripes or Evans
Hydraulics, but sometimes Aquarians. I try to try new stuff, but that gets
kind of expensive.
Go see Pere Ubu (the band I¹ve been in for like a dozen years, often
described as old, weird, fat, scary, annoying, mean, etc.‹wait, did I say
awesome?). My singer tells me that we are the greatest rock band in the
world. Here are some upcoming dates:
Saturday, March 22, Pour Haus, Louisville, KY
Sunday, March 23, Pilot Light, Knoxville, TN
Monday, March 24, Neighborhood Theatre, Charlotte, NC‹live film underscore
Tuesday, March 25, Plaza Theatre, Atlanta, GA‹live film underscore
AND
Pere Ubu performs a musical adaptation of Alfred Jarry¹s Ubu Roi on
Thursday, April 24 and Friday, April 25 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London.
Um, and go see Roué (compare to, say, Sonic Youth and The Jesus
Lizard‹pounding and pretty, and sometimes pretty ugly, oh, and really loud)
and Liquid (kinda power-poppy, heavy rock-ish, with hugeŠeverything). Come
say hi. And while I¹m pimping my bands, I don¹t do MySpace, but Roué
(www.myspace.com/roue) and Liquid (www.myspace.com/liquidsuperstars and
www.myspace.com/myhitmachine) do. And Pere Ubu¹s got a Web site, too:
www.ubuprojex.net.
What You Need To Know As An Indie Artist About Making It Big

What You Need To Know As An Indie Artist About Making It Big
By Henry Vargas
A quick question. What do Colbe Caillet, Kinna Grannis and many other new artist have in common. ..? Go ahead, take a guess. Give up? They were discovered on the internet! I will be sharing with you what the big deal about that is later in this article, for now just now that that’s a big factor.
So a couple of the things you may have noticed over the past few years in the music industry is a shift. Not only a shift in the buyers of CDs, but also in the artist who make CDs. If youve watched the news or followed the industry, you’d know that according to their resources, less and less people are buying CDs, which is crippling The Big Three. The Big Three are the three major labels that make up what’s known as the industry. There are a couple reasons for this, as I will share with you now.
First, unlikely your first guess, is because people are tired of buying CDs with one or two good songs on them and a bunch of $15 garbage! That’s right, I said it! Most of the CDs released today are simply made up of one or two good to great songs, and all the rest are just filler to fill a CD. Now, this is not necessarily true of all genres, but it is for the most part.
Remember several years ago a company named Napster started a new way of sharing music? Did you know that at Napster’s height, CD sales were at increased by 5%, which is alot considering that could mean millions of dollars. Did you know however that the major players were so scared about letting people sample their music by letting them download it for free that they actually pursued Napster with legal action and got it shut down? But here’s the clencher, after they successfully shut down Napster, CD sales Dropped 4%. That’s a 9 % swing representing millions if not billions of dollars.
So here is the first secret I’ll reveal to you…ready…..here goes…..Give people the chance to sample your music by giving them at least 1 Free download of one of your songs. There you go, the first secret.
Now, another thing the Big 3 will get made at me for sharing with you is the fact you no longer need their permission to create, market and become the star you want to be (if that’s what you want of course). Remember I mentioned earlier Colbe Caillet and Kinna Grannis, well the reason I point them out is because before they were approached by a major record label they already had a fan base, and in the music world the fan base list is gold. They very well could have made a wonderful fortune without the major record deal, (and they would still be able to go to the grocery store without getting mobbed by papparatzie).
A third thing I will share with you is the fact that it is possible to make over $100,000 a year with your music without a major record deal. That’s one of the main reasons why the major record labels may get mad at me but to bad. I believe that as indie artist and musicians, you guys (and girls) should keep most of the money you work so hard (or play so hard) to make. That’s one of my goals is to assist as many of you as possible to achieve success with you music.
So, I will come back and write some more useful stuff for you all, until then.

AVIOM UNVEILS NEW 6416M MIC INPUT MODULE
WITH REMOTE CONTROL OPTIONS AT NAB 2008
Company responds to customer demand with ultimate remote controllable mic preamp coupled with state-of-the-art digital transport
Las Vegas, March 13, 2008—Aviom, exclusive developer of the world’s most powerful audio transport protocol, A-Net®, is introducing the latest addition to its innovative Pro64® Series of audio distribution products, the 6416m Mic Input Module, at NAB 2008 (Booth N8236). In tandem with this debut are its companion products, the RCI Remote Control Interface and the MCS Mic Control Surface.
The industry has been eagerly anticipating Aviom’s latest additions to its Pro64 Series product line, and the 6416m delivers with 16 state-of-the-art remote-controllable mic-level inputs to a Pro64 audio network. Each channel on the 6416m has a continuously variable gain setting, multi-segment signal level LEDs and individual channel on/off switches. The 6416m supports all valid Pro64 sample rates, from 44.1/48kHz± to 192kHz±. Because the system does not rely on sample rate converters users are guaranteed pristine, low latency distribution of the digital signal regardless of the sample rate of incoming audio. The 6416m Mic Input Module, and its companion products, all target the broadcast, production, live performance and post-production markets.
According to Ray Legnini, Aviom’s product research and development manager, “Our design team has put in countless hours to make the 6416m the best sounding remote-controlled mic preamp currently available anywhere. When you consider the power and versatility that the Pro64 network adds to the mix, this product is an extraordinary value. The MCS is designed to make remote control of the networked mic pres simple and intuitive. This suite of products delivers outstanding fidelity, coupled with the flexibility and ease of use Aviom is known for.”
The 6416m can be remote controlled by adding the RCI Remote Control Interface and MCS Mic Control Surface. The 1U RCI provides a network access point and monitor station and accepts the MCS Mic Control Surface, which is used to select and edit any active mic preamp channel anywhere in the network. Up to 64 channels of mic pres can be controlled remotely from a single MCS, or the Control Group function on the 6416m and RCI can be used to divide control among up to four different sets of simultaneous users and control points.
The 3U-high 6416m Mic Input Module is compatible with all Aviom Pro64 digital audio network products and can be connected to analog or digital output modules, or to the 6416Y2 Yamaha® console card in any combination. MH10 and MH10f Merger Hubs can be added for bidirectional parallel connections on Cat-5 or single- or multi-mode fiber optics.
Virtual Data Cable™ (VDC) connectivity for GPIO, MIDI, and RS-232 is also included on the rear panel of the 6416m Mic input Module, allowing users to configure and transmit up to 14 channels of non-audio data throughout the Pro64 A-Net network, without compromising audio bandwidth.
Other features include +48V phantom power, low-cut filter, phase invert, and pad per channel. Each 6416m can save 16 mic preamp presets that store all input channel parameters for easy recall. Mic inputs use balanced XLR connectors; the passive split/auxiliary input connects via DB25 multipins. A-Net audio network connections feature locking EtherCon RJ45 connectors.
For more information about the 6416m, RCI, MCS, or any of Aviom’s products, visit www.aviom.com.
Aviom is the world leader and pioneer of personal monitor mixing technology with the popular Pro16 Series, as well as the exclusive developer of the revolutionary Pro64 Series of audio networking products. All Aviom products are powered by A-Net®, the company’s groundbreaking high-speed digital audio transmission protocol.
