DIVINE CIRCUMVENTION

“Once I heard People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, I felt like I had to be a part of hip-hop. I didn’t know how. Hell, I didn’t even know what a producer was. I just knew I had to figure out how to make music like this ‘cause that shit was crazy.”
For posterity’s sake, let’s attribute the above quote to Charles Misodi Njapa, better known as 88-Keys, on Sept. 18, 2008. But let’s also co-sign it to anyone—and there are more of you than you think—who’s ever had a similar thought to albums like A Tribe Called Quest’s debut. After a brief flirtation with fame in the late-’90s, crafting gems for Mos Def, J-Live, and Black Star, 88’s current mix of Golden Age-era beats with diverse genres, coupled with a geek-like obsession for fashion and the Internet, has made him the modern personification of a movement. For anyone who watches old hip-hop videos on Youtube, scans hip-hop message boards in the office and can’t empathize with 50’s problems, 88-Keys feels your pain.
Throughout various stages of the genre over the past ten years—think Mafioso strings, handclaps, etc.—we could find 88-Keys (named years ago by legendary producer Large Professor) with a MPC and a crate full of records, waiting on the word of God (more on that later.) With his debut album, The Death of Adam, dropping after more than a decade in the game, the concept album stands more as the producers’ resurrection than next play in a continuous career.

Like the best raconteurs, everything is a story, and a conversation with Keys is not so much linear as labyrinthine, filled with backtracks, dead ends, and stories-within-a-story. It’s this same ability that helps carry Adam, a fictional tale that eschews the standard producer album in favor of a concept album about, well…
“The vajayjay,” says 88.
“Excuse me?”
“The vag,” he says, clarifying, as in vagina. “I got this word from God: this is what your album’s gonna be about. Get to work, my child.”

Election Fever
We understand that not everyone on Twitter is watching the US
Presidential Election closely but the world is indeed watching.
We created Twitter Election 2008 to demonstrate the power of
Twitter during a shared event. The US Presidential and Vice
Presidential debates are massively shared events and they are
creating unprecedented levels of activity on Twitter. Fridays
are normally fairly slow on Twitter but not last week–updates
and signups increased dramatically on the day of the first

Twitter Won an Emmy!
Well, sorta. Greg Yaitanes, an angel investor and advisor to
Twitter walked on stage at the packed Nokia Theatre in Los
Angeles a couple weeks ago and accepted an Emmy for outstanding
directing of a drama series. His acceptance speech was watched
by over 12 million people! So maybe Twitter didn’t win directly
but we’re really proud of Greg and the idea that we now have an

LOS ANGELES - October 1, 2008 - MySpace Music (http://www.myspace.com/music) the world’s most popular music community, is proud to announce that it will premier Radiohead’s new video for the song “Reckoner,” the next single from In Rainbows. The animated video was created by Clement Picon of France, who was one of four winners of the In Rainbows Animated Music Video Contest. The winners were selected by the members of Radiohead themselves and the band has decided that Picon’s video for “Reckoner” will serve as the official video for the song. The contest was promoted on Adult Swim, MySpace and aniBoom.com, where fans were able to vote for their favorite video and help determine the finalists from which Radiohead chose the winners. “CHOKE” HITS THEATERS NATIONWIDE FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26
The creators of “CHOKE” are proud to announce the new music video clip that features Ben Kweller’s “The Rules,” his contribution to the film’s soundtrack. As a collection of snapshots spotlighting a few of the film’s notable scenes, “The Rules” compliments the film’s unbelievably quirky personality through Kweller’s hard-edged, guitar-heavy offering.
The album, a digital-only release on ATO Records, contains seven songs from the film and eight others that are significant to actor, director and screen writer Clark Gregg’s vision while he was making it. Highlights include previously recorded songs by the likes of Radiohead, Death Cab For Cutie, My Morning Jacket, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, The Fiery Furnaces, and The Twilights Singers. Most notable additions are the previously unreleased or rare tracks that appear on the record, among them “Orgasm Addict” by The Buzzcocks as sung by the band’s original singer Howard Devoto, a great version of The Doors’ “Crystal Ship” by the incomparable Nicole Atkins and The Sea, and the original version by The Natural History of Spoon’s current hit single, “Don’t You Ever.”
Fox Searchlight Pictures and ATO Pictures present “Choke,” a Contrafilm/ATO Pictures Production, based on the novel by maverick author Chuck Palahniuk (”Fight Club”). Actor-turned-director Gregg shows he is as adept behind the camera as he is in front of it with this wickedly comedic tale of Victor Mancini, con artist, sex addict, Colonial village re-enactor, angst-filled son, serial restaurant choker — and unsuspecting romantic antihero for our unsettling times.
The film will be in theatres on September 26 and features an ensemble cast including Sam Rockwell, Anjelica Huston, Kelly Macdonald, Brad William Henke and Jonah Bobo. Nathan Larson composed the score.

Greg Brunkalla (director of “List of Demands”) was in LA this summer and got a call from Saul Williams. He was calling to see if they could film something quickly for Saul’s website. They got together at Greg’s hotel and quickly started brainstorming about other things they could film. An hour later this DNA video is what they came up with. All shot in a hotel room, in slow motion, and out of focus.
